A two-vehicle collision in Newton has claimed the life of a mother and her 16-year-old son.

Surrey RCMP said a small black Pontiac sedan was hit on the driver's side by a larger gold Infiniti SUV just before 12 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of 132 Street and 60 Avenue.

Police said the Pontiac was heading south on 132 Street when it arrived at the four-way stop.

As the smaller car was making a left turn, it was broadsided by the larger SUV, which was travelling north.

The force of the collision knocked the two vehicles into the front yard of the Berea Baptist church near a roadside memorial set up to remember another fatal accident.

The son was declared dead at the scene, the mother died later. Investigators say excessive speed appears to have been a factor.
