The Universal Cultural Society of Canada and Kwantlen Plaza is hosting an event on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at Kwantlen Plaza, 7045 128 St. from 12-6 p.m. to celebrate lohri.

There will also be a food drive (of non-perishable items) for the Surrey Food Bank.

Lohri is the harvest festival of Punjab, India and is celebrated every year on the 13th of January. Newlyweds and couples with newborns are an integral part of the celebrations, as lohri promotes fertility.

At the Surrey event, there will be live entertainment from 4-6 p.m. and dancing around a bonfire – customary at lohri, during the time of year when the Earth begins moving closer to the sun.

Singing and dancing form an intrinsic part of the fun, as people wear their brightest clothes and dance the bhangra and gidda to the beat of the dhol.

Free refreshments will be available, including mungfali, rewri tea and pakora.

Everyone is welcome. Please RSVP by e-mail or phone: Vinay Sharma at 604-782-7624 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
