In a shocking incident, a woman was set on fire by two men in Delhi on Saturday evening. Tavleen aka Mona Suri, a fashion designer by profession who lived in Delhi's upmarket Greater Kailash area with her husband and two daughters was with her mother-in-law at the time of the incident.

Eyewitness account

According to an eyewitness, Mona's attackers came to her at around 6:15 PM on Saturday and rang the door bell. Mona came on the balcony, but did not open the door. The duo came back after abour 45 minutes with a bottle. This time, Mona opened the door for them and they threw acid on her set her on fire and fled the scene.


Mona, who was rushed to a private clinic was later shifted to the Safdarjung Hospital in a critical condition with 80% burns. She is currently battling for life. Her mother-in-law, who tried to save her too sustained burn injuries. Her assailants are absconding and the reason for the attack has not been established yet.

Crime of passion?

However, sources in police claimed that a woman named Rachana from her husband's workplace had been harassing Mona as "she was obsessed with Mona's husband." Rachana had also tried to hurt Mona by running her car over Mona's feet a couple of days back, the sources said adding that Rachana who is now the main accused in the case had made threatening calls not only to Mona but also to her mother-in-law.

According to the police, the two men were also known to Mona as they were aware of the movements of the family and chose to attack Mona when her husband, a travel agent, was away in Goa on a business trip. Police have launched a manhunt for the attackers. Interestingly, there was no security guard outside the Suri residence when the incident took place.
