The Province

Do we need neighbourhood patrols in our parks? Has it come to that? Clearly the police aren't able to mitigate the threat of troubled, hate-filled teens congregating in our parks in the middle of the night. In a cowardly, unprovoked attacked Surrey RCMP describe as "absolutely despicable," two elderly Sikh men were set upon by several white teens in Bear Creek Park early this morning. The two men in their mid-70s were taking their morning walk in the neighbourhood park when the group of marauding youths came out of the dark to assault them around 5:30 this morning.
While police were reluctant to label the attack a hate crime, the assaults bear disturbing similarities to the fatal beatings of two elderly south Asian males in a Bear Creek Park washroom two years ago. The Caucasian teens involved in that attack were later convicted of manslaughter.
The two seniors in this latest attack are expected to make a complete physical recovery.
