Police have named the two young women who were killed in a traffic accident early Sunday morning in Delta, B.C.

Anuraj (Annie) Nijjar, 23, of Delta, and 22-year-old Maninder (Mindy) Sahota of Surrey died on Nordel Way after their car, which was travelling westbound, crossed the centre line into the path of an eastbound vehicle and was struck broadside around 12:50 a.m. Their vehicle was completely demolished by the impact.

The driver of the eastbound vehicle was taken to hospital for medical treatment and was released.

"Initial indicators are that speed was definitely a contributing factor. With respect to anything else such as road conditions, mechanics, alcohol involvement or driver experience, those are things that will be forming part of our investigation," said Delta Police Const. Sharlene Brooks on Sunday.

A candlelight vigil to be held in their honour will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 25, at A.H.P. Matthew Elementary School in Surrey.

Meanwhile friends and family are using the social media website Facebook to share memories of Annie and Mindy. The two Facebook pages have around a thousand members each and dozens of comments from shocked friends.

The investigation into the accident by Delta Police is continuing.
