METRO VANCOUVER - One woman is dead and another in serious condition following a shooting in Newton Tuesday afternoon.
A man has been taken into police custody while investigators conduct interviews to determine what transpired inside the home before the incident, according to a statement released by Surrey RCMP.
Officers were called to the residence in the 14300-block of 72 Ave. at about 4:45 p.m. Tuesday and closed off the street between 142nd and 144th Street.
Harjinder Bains, who lives on the same block, said she heard from her neighbours there was a dispute between family members in the home and two people were shot.
"We were shocked to hear about it," said Bains. "It's a peaceful neighbourhood."
Her daughter, Raj Sandhu, said she saw an Indo-Canadian man taken away by police and another person taken away by ambulance.
Surrey RCMP General Duty members as well as the General Investigative Support Team responded and are working with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) to resolve this matter.
